Transgenders are committing suicide at the alarming rate of approximately 20%. (see ref)
I was unaware the suicide rate was so high until I saw the story last year on Mike Penner, the 25 year employee and staff sports writer for the Los Angeles Times, who as a transgender was struggling with gender identity issues, but did not get the help needed and ended his long struggle with suicide.
I started to look into the rate of suicide and was shocked to discover it was so out of control in the relatively small transgender community. So, why is it so high?
If the Harry Benjamin Standards of Care are the guide to the treatment of transgenders and the helping therapists are highly qualified professionals, why then is the rate of suicide so darn high? Why do so many good people take their life? Something must be deadly wrong.
My conclusion is very simple--something is very wrong with one of the following: 1) the Harry Benjamin Standards of Care, 2) the therapists are not qualified to provide care for such depressed individuals, 3) changing genders and hormone therapy are not the best possible treatment procedure for at least 20% of the transgender population struggling with GID disorder.
If the suicides were not by transsexuals, someone surely would sound the alarm bells. But they are transsexuals.
Listen; the alarm bells are ringing.
